Abstract

The following article is a partial report of the study “School sports and competitions in the formal education system: the situation in Montevideo.” We discuss the findings regarding competitions in the fifth and sixth grades of primary school in private schools in Montevideo, their characterization, and the theoretical assumptions that support them. We introduce and address the discussion around the place attributed to school sports, its structure in curricular and extracurricular settings, and competition as a teaching resource. The purpose of this publication is to disseminate knowledge and to contribute to the professionalization of physical education by connecting its actors and facilitating theoretical discussions based on the professional practice.
