Abstract
‘I accept your summons. I will lead this crusade.’ With these words, Dwight D. Eisenhower, former Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force in Europe during the Second World War, Army Chief of Staff, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the first NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), accepted the GOP (Republican) nomination in July 1952. Eight months later he was elected to the highest office in the land, winning 442 electoral college votes to Adlai Stevenson’s 89, and carrying all but 9 states.
