Abstract
Sustainable development is a rising principle of the EU legal system. It emphasises values such as the social and economic welfare of the EU and its Member States, and the quality of the environment that must be respected when formulating and implementing all EU policies. This should also be the case with the current EU priority, which is the digitalisation of Europe, including the digitalisation of the EU and the administration of its Member States. This article analyses how the principle of sustainable development, based on three pillars โ balanced economic growth, a social market economy, and a high level of environmental protection โ is taken into account by EU institutions in the context of a digital transformation. Next, the paper focuses on the relationship between the digitalisation of public administration and environmental sustainability. Digital tools used by the administration, such as artificial intelligence, 5G, cloud and edge computing, and the Internet of Things, can be the driving force of the ecological transformation of Europe. Nevertheless, the threats to the environment that may result from ICT development should also not be underestimated.
