Abstract
This chapter focuses on the development and ideation of E-Governance in India. Initially, the author explains the historical development of E-Governance, which started with the establishment of the National Informatics Centre followed by launch of NICNET. Akshaya and Gyandoot were amongst the first few projects launched in India. The chapter also explains the set-up of National E-Governance Division in India. The National E-Governance Plan (NeGP) was launched under this division having different Mission Mode Projects at various levels like State, Central and Integrated. Several initiatives for infrastructure were taken under NeGP like State-wide Area Networks, State Data Centers, Common Service Centres and Electronic Service Delivery Gateways. The authors summarized the E-Governance policies and initiatives in this chapter.
