Abstract
In this work, the results of the application of a brief emotional education program (EDEMCO) to children in grade 1 (aged 6) attending two schools in Madrid are presented. The aim of the study was to test the efficacy of this program to increase children´s abilities for recognizing of other people´s emotions and understanding simple and complex emotions. A preintervention assessment of the emotional competencies (emotional clarity and understanding) of the experimental and control groups revealed that these groups did not significantly differ from each other in the study variables. The postintervention assessment showed that the experimental group scored significantly higher than the control group in the emotional competencies. A follow-up assessment one year later revealed an increment in the emotional competencies in both the experimental and control groups, although the mean scores of the experimental group continued being significantly higher than those of the control group.
