Abstract

Objectives Describe the clinical efficacy of burprenorphine in the maintenance treatment of opioid dependence. Material and methods This study describes the most relevant studies that have evaluated the utility of burprenorphine as maintenance treatment of opioid dependence, compared to placebo and other opiate treatments such as methadone and LAAM. Results Burprenorphine is a pharmaceutical opiate that has demonstrated efficacy in the maintenance treatment of opiate dependent patients when compared to placebo as well as to other opiate treatments such as methadone and LAAM. Burprenorphine, at doses between 8 mg. and 16 mg. is well tolerated and is effective in the reduction of opiate use and is at least as effective as methadone. Conclusions Burprenorphine is effective in the treatment of opiate addiction, as a first line treatment, in maintenance programs for first time patients or for patients who have previously been in maintenance programs with other opiate treatments
