Abstract

I would agree with Sir Martin Ryle (Physics Bulletin March 1980 p43) that electric storage heaters have an effective efficiency below 100% since they liberate heat at a maximum rate in the early morning to little advantage. Surely, however, one has an analogous problem with a coal stove; 80–85% efficiency can be obtained only somewhere near the rated optimum heat output.
