TeichmannUniversitSt Hamburg, Institut fiir Angewandte PhysikJungiusstr. 11, D-2000 Hamburg 36Federal Republic of GermanyWe report on the new 1.06 micron laser material Cr *,Nd *:Y3(ScxAl2 )A130, 2 (Cr , Nd : YSAG) . To find a congruent melting composition for this mixed garnet, bouies were grown with Sc concentrations between x = 0.9 and x=1.6. With rods prepared from these Cr- sensitized Nd-crystals flashlamp pumped laser experiments have been performed. Untill now slope efficiencies up to 6.4% are obtained at a repetition rate of 10 Hz.Compared to NdrYAG the major drawbacks of conventional Cr-sensit ized Nd-garnet lasers are their poor thermal properties, leading to strong thermal lensing effects. Therefore, a host lattice with better thermal conductivity at high energy transfer rates could show increased lasing efficiency and repetition rate capabilities. Due to its lighter constituents YSAG should have these advantages over the Ga-garnets like Gd 3Sc 2Ga 0,Chemical Formula Abbr. Thermal Cond. (W K m ] Reference
