Abstract

The interaction of various π-alkenyl-nickel chlorides with zinc and nickel trichloracetates was studied. It was shown that as well as forming active centres of π-RNiCl·A (A is the acceptor) responsible for polymerization, π-RNiCl breaks down with the formation of corresponding R-R dialkenyls. A study was made of the yield of R-R, according to the type of π-RNiCl. From an examination of polymerization kinetics of butadiene and numerical average molecular weights of polymers with a low degree of conversion the concentration of active centres in the systems studied (efficiency of initiation) was calculated. It was shown that only about 10% of the theoretical value of active centres forms in all systems.
