Abstract

Restrictions on using antibiotics in animal farming and the raised awareness of consumers who increasingly often choose organic products to make breeders look for natural products stimulating animal productivity. Such preparations include herbs and herbal products that used to be the underlying means for health prevention and treatment of animal diseases. Herbs and herbal extracts positively influence the intake of feed by pigs and nutrient digestibility. Regulating digestive processes displaces harmful bacterial microflora, making way for beneficial micro-organisms to colonise the gastrointestinal tract. Herbs also regulate the body's operation by improving the resistance of animals to adverse environmental conditions and diseases, which is reflected by improved animal productivity. Herbal additives can positively influence carcass composition and meat quality. This paper reviews the results of studies investigating the use of herbs in pig feeding.
