Abstract

ABSTRACT This research was set up to determine the efficacy of a synthetic biomimetic skin substitute of poly-L-lactide (PLLA)/gelatin nanofiber membrane in facilitating chronic cutaneous wound healing. The material physical properties and biological characteristics were evaluated. The safety and effectiveness were further confirmed by clinical applications. Results indicated that the average diameter of the nano pores in the biomimetic substitute was 0.65 μm. The mean contact angle was 80.39°, and the average tensile strength was 4.42 ± 0.43 MPa. The proliferation of fibroblasts and monocytes was significantly improved at day 7 cultured on the substitute. Moreover, the bacterial adhesion on the substitute was decreased. In the clinical case study, the percentage of complete wound healing was 93.3%, and the rate of reoperation was 6.7%. Thus, this technology presents an intriguing possible therapeutic modality that provides pain relief and diminishes the burden of reoperation in the setting of chronic wound management.
