Abstract

Objective To elucidate the status of high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) in the treatment of patients with advanced liver cancer in China, and then evaluate its efficacy and complications. Methods Statistic analysis was carried out in all eligible trials about HIFU for advanced liver cancer by searching PubMed, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database and Chinese Medical Current Contents. Results Thirty-five literatures were selected including 1599 cases. The excellently-effective rates of HIFU treatment group and combined treatment group ( HIFU with other methods) were 16.68% and 16.73%, effective rates were 73.20% and 78.01%, serum AFP descent rates were 61.94% and 70.83%, remission rates for hepatalgia symptom were 84.62% and 89.45%, respectively. The overall survival rates at 6, 12, and 24 months were 78.0% vs 89.86% ,54.55% vs 64.84% and 26.34% vs 27.30%. Mean survival time was (9.3±2.86) months vs(10.0±0.57) months, respectively. Side effects of HIFU were postoperative transient liver pain(75/1103,6.8% ), low fever ( 68/1103 , 6.2% ) and skin burn (278/1103,25.2%).Severe complications were rare. Conclusion As a noninvasive therapy, HIFU appears to be effective, safe and feasible in the palliative treatment of patients with liver cancer of advanced stage.
