Abstract

This research deals with the effects of gender, physical appearance, and internality/ externality in recruitment. Professional recruiters evaluated the files of applicants for the positions of bank consultant and manager. Internality does seem to be a discriminating characteristic. Furthermore, although a woman has as much chance as a man of being recruited for a junior position, she sees her chances decrease for a managerial position. Finally, the impact of beauty varies depending on the hierarchical level: for a junior position, the attractive candidate is preferred; for a senior position, beauty is an advantage for men but a disadvantage for women.
