Effects of Yunnan Baiyao San combined with artificial bezoar and metronidazole on inflammatory factors and therapeutic effect in patients with acute periodontitis

Abstract

Objective To investigate the effects of Yunnan Baiyao San combined with artificial bezoar and metronidazole on inflammatory factors and therapeutic effect in patients with acute periodontitis. Methods A total of 82 patients with acute periapical periodontitis treated at our hospital from October, 2014 to January, 2017 were enrolled in this study, and were randomly divided into an observation group and a control group, 41 cases for each group. The control group were treated with artificial bezoar and metronidazole capsules; in addition, the observation group were treated with Yunnan Baiyao San. The levels of inflammatory cytokines and pain in the two groups before and after the treatment were compared. The clinical efficacies were evaluated. Results After the treatment, the levels of TNF-α, IL-6, hs-CRP, and other inflammatory factors and VSA scores decreased significantly in both groups, which were significantly lower than those in the same group before treatment and lower in the observation group than in the control group (P<0.05). The total effective rate was 97.6% in the observation group, and was 80.5% in the control group, with a statistical difference (P<0.05). Conclusion Yunnan Baiyao San combined with artificial bezoar and metronidazole in the treatment of acute periodontitis can significantly inhibit the patients' inflammatory response, relieve their pain, and increase clinical efficacy.
