Abstract
On day 113 of gestation, 31 of 62 sows received an oral dose (750 mg sow−1) of trilostane, an inhibitor of 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase. All sows received an injection of PGF2α 3 h later. The onset of farrowing in trilostane-treated sows was earlier than controls (25.7 vs. 28.8 h; P < 0.05) and more sows farrowed during the normal working day (83.9 vs. 64.5%). This effect was due to a decrease in progesterone concentration with no adverse effect on piglets or sows. Key words: Farrowing, trilostane, sow
