Abstract
Long-offset transient electromagnetic (LOTEM) surveys were recently carried out at Vesuvius volcano, Italy, and at Merapi volcano, Indonesia. In such areas, topography effects have to be considered as a potential cause for curve distortions. A modeling study was carried out simulating the effect of a mountain on vertical magnetic field time derivatives using a 3-D finite difference code. The objective was to assess whether and in which cases topography effects might be ignored, and to help identifying them in existing data.
