Abstract

To find out the effects of SiC addition on the ablation properties of carbon/carbon (C/C) composites, C/C composites with and without SiC addition were ablated by oxyacetylene torch in different heat fluxes. Results indicated that the SiC addition improved the ablation property of C/C composites in the case of heat flux below 3.64 ± 10% MW/m2 whereas it displayed an opposite effect when heat flux was above that value. Ablation morphologies suggested that the relative erosion speed of SiC addition to pyrocarbon matrix took a change when heat flux rose to higher than 3.64 ± 10% MW/m2, which determined the opposite effects of SiC addition on the ablation properties of C/C composites.
