Abstract

Objective To explore the mechanism of intraarticular injections of Shenmai in the treatment of osteoarthritis by research on hyaluronic acid ( HA ). Method 30 male Clean-class New Zealand white rabbits were divided into treatmene group, control group, and blank group. The model of osteoarthritis was established by modified Hulth method in the first two groups. Then the treatment group received an intraarticular injection of Shenmai of 0.8 ml daily for 4 weeks and the control group received 1 ml of normal saline. Synovial fluid was extracted to detect HA level by Elisa on weeks 1 and 4. Results Baseline HA level was significantly lower in the treatment and the control group than in the blank group( P<0.01 ); After therapy, the HA level was markedly higher in the treatment group than in the control group ( P< 0.01 ). Conclusions Intraarticular injections of Shenmai can be used to treat osteoarthritis by raising HA level in the synovial fluid. Key words: Shenmai injection; Hyaluronic acid; Osteoarthritis
