Abstract

Microbiological tests using fungal spores in the presence of organic carbon were carried out on untreated and resin-treated samples of Serena stone after incubation at 28°C for six months and the results show that: 1) only three of the eleven moulds inoculated grew on the samples; 2) fungal growth caused disaggregation of the untreated samples but not the treated ones as observed by scanning electron microscopy; 3) fungal growth caused a significantly greater weight loss in the untreated samples.
