Abstract

The testis of the adult guppy treated with Methallibure (1:10� parts) for 8 weeks, contains a few cysts of earlier stages of spermatogenesis and numerous intact spermatophores. The epithelial cells lining the efferent ducts are smaller than in controls, but there are no changes in either Sertoli cells or interstitial cells. These regressive changes are less marked than those after hypophysectomy. Evidently Methallibure does not completely block the production and/or release of pituitary gonadotropins in the adult guppy. The same dose of Methallibure seems to be fully effective in blocking the production and/or release of gonadotropins in the juvenile guppy. Although these results are based on histological studies of only five male fish in each of the groups, the effects are highiy consistent and significant when compared with the controls.
