Abstract

Objective To explore the effects of mental intervention based on mindfulness-based stress reduction on anxiety, depression and quality of life among patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) so as to provide a basis for improving quality of life of COPD patients. Methods From October 2016 to May 2017, we selected 72 COPD patients of Respiratory Department in Heilongjiang Provincial Hospital as subjects by convenience sampling. All of the patients were divided into control group and observation group with the random number table, 36 cases in each group. Control group received routine nursing and follow-up. On this basis of that in control group, observation group carried out mental intervention based on mindfulness-based stress reduction. The Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) and the Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS) were used to evaluate patients' moods; and the St.George's Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ) was used to investigate their quality of life. Results Two cases lost to follow-up in control group and three cases did not complete the training in observation group. Finally, a total of 34 cases and 33 cases were included in control group and observation group respectively. Before intervention, there was no statistical difference in the scores of SDS, SAS and SGRQ (P>0.05) . After intervention, the scores of SAS and SDS of observation group were statistically lower than those of control group (P 0.05) . Conclusions Mindfulness-based stress reduction can improve moods and quality of life of COPD patients. It is worth to be widely used in clinical application.
