Abstract

Studies show various harmful effects of Kohl on the eye and its related parts which leads to several eye problems as well as the harmful effect on the human body. The use of Kohl causes tear film contamination and severe ocular discomfort. Usage of Kohl increases the debris on the lipid layer of the tear film causing meibomian gland blockage. This results in reduced stability of tear film. Its use also results in external eye infections in children. Application of Kohl in children leads to asymptomatic lead poisoning. Tear film destabilization occurs due to particles migration across the eyelid margin causing poor tear film stability and dry eye symptoms. There are microbial pathogens and toxic metals in Kohl that prove harmful to the human body. The poisoning caused due to the use of Kohl affects the general health and causes different problems like anxiety and irritability, abdominal cramps and anemia, etc.
