Abstract
The basic idea of JPEG2000 compression algorithm is reviewed and a digital aerial image is compressed for test. Image character analysis and image contrast analysis are proposed for image quality assessment. Through comparing the changes of different measures, the effects of JPEG2000 on aerial image quality are examined. The results show that mean gray value, standard variance, and entropy stay relatively constant as the compression ratio increases. This finding suggests that JPEG2000 is excellent and has little effect on overall gray value changes, histogram, and image content. At the same time, reconstruct image texture becomes coarse and inconsistent with original image as compression ratio increases. Keywords—JPEG2000, image compression, image quality assessment
