Abstract

AbstractThe EPR spectra of several aqueous solutions of mixtures of hydrophobic species such as t‐butanol or Bu4 NBr with a nitroxide free radical probe 2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl‐4‐piperidone‐N‐oxide have been analyzed in an attempt to learn about the local effects produced by hydrophobic solutes on the water structure and about the dynamics of the interactions among hydrophobic particles in water. Effects characteristic of hydrophobic interactions are identified by comparison of the spectra with those of solutions of the probe in aqueous glycerol at the same viscosity. The probe studied here exhibits several interesting effects which may be associated with its interaction with clusters of hydrophobic species but seems less sensitive to the effects of pair interaction with a single other hydrophobic particle, except perhaps the ion B(C6H5)4−.
