Abstract

The 28-day mortality rate was determined for female CFl mice given B10-enriched borax or Li6-enriched LiCl intravenously and exposed 5 minutes later to graded doses of total-body thermal neutron radiation. The LD50 values were as follows: 25 mu g of B10 per gram. per gram, 0.84 plus or minus 0.04 x 1012 n/cm2; thermal neutrons alone, 4.77 plus or minus 0.14 x aa and Li7) from B10 neutron capture was calculated to be 2.0; a value of 3.2 was obtained for the particles ( alpha and tritium) from Li6 neutron capture. The tendency to 3- and 4-day deaths was found to be much more pronounced in animals exposed to heavy particle irradiation as compared to those exposed to x-ray, gamma , fast neutron, or thermal neutron irradiation.
