Abstract

The transverse pulse discharges in H/sub 2/ + Br/sub 2/ mixture gas can generate the laser oscillations at wavelengths of 4047 to 4428 ..mu..m which is related to vibration-rotation transitions. The optimum mixing ratio and pressure are H/sub 2/ + Br/sub 2/ = 29:1 and 30 to 70 torr, respectively. Addition of He gas stabilizes the HBr laser power up to 400 torr and reduces the pulsewidth shorter than 0.2 ..mu..s (FWHM) at 400 torr; the total energy is concentrated in the four spectral lines corresponding to the transition of v = 1 ..-->.. 0. Addition of SF/sub 6/ gas enhances the output power and stimulates the HF laser lines. When SF/sub 6/ gas is mixed at 30 torr the output power is increased six times as large, especially at lines of the transition of v = 1 ..-->.. 0. This new method is applicable to other chemical lasers.
