Abstract

The effect of irradiation by 60Co gamma rays in the dose range 0–105 Gy has been examined on cellulose nitrate (Daicel 6000) and two different types of CR-39 SSTND detectors. The results indicate that in CN the bulk etching rate begins to increase slowly at first when the gamma dose exceeds 2 × 103 Gy, and then rapidly beyond a dose of 104 Gy. For CR-39, the bulk and track etching rates begin to increase when the gamma dose exceeds 103Gy. The effect on the etch induction time of irradiating these detectors with gamma rays before or after their exposure to a Cf-252 source has also been investigated.
