Abstract
SYNOPSIS Two studies (conducted in 1984 and 1985) tested the effects of irrigation during mid-September to mid-November on the morphology and root growth potential (RGP) of 1-0 bare-root loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) seedlings. For both studies, fall irrigation (131 to 146 mm) increased height, root-collar diameter, shoot weight and root weight of seedlings growing in sand. Shoot-root ratios were not significantly affected by the irrigation treatment. Irrigating in the fall did not reduce RGP of seedlings lifted in early winter (both treatments averaged more than 70 new roots per seedling). However, root-collar diameter and root dry weight were correlated with RGP.
