Abstract

The prevalence of insomnia and depression is higher in women than it is in men, although women show better sleep when measured using polysomnography measurements. The risk of insomnia and depression in women specifically increases during life phases when sex hormones strongly fluctuate, such as pregnancy and menopause. This study examined the effects of sex hormone use (also called gender-affirming hormone therapy, or GAHT) by transgender persons on reported depressive symptoms and sleep quality.
