Abstract
The single channel nature of voice radio communications often limits the productivity of air traffic controller teams in congested en route airspace. The premise of this article is that implementing a controller-pilot data link system will improve sector performance in such situations by facilitating the distribution of communications and decision making tasks among team members. Supporting data are presented from a recent high fidelity simulation study designed to assess user benefits of data link. The results showed that three-controller teams using voice and data link communications were able to better distribute position work load, and exhibited increased teamwork, intrateam communication, and improved sector productivity in comparison to teams working in a voice-only communications environment. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
