Abstract

The properties of surface plasmon (SP) resonance in a multilayer system have been investigated. We derived an approximation of the reflectivity formula from the Fresnel formulas. Furthermore, a series of approximate expressions for the damping rate of SP, the resonant angle, the optimum metallic thickness of the system, and the halfwidth of resonance have been proposed. Theoretical calculations are in good agreement with the numerical simulations. This study leads to the conclusion that the damping rate of SP and the halfwidth of resonance for a silver film used in the multilayer system are much smaller than those of other metal films used in the system In addition, the damping rate of SP can also be decreased and the sensitivity of resonant angle can be increased by using a prism with a small dielectric constant.
