Abstract
ABSTRACT Lake Kinneret is a major contributor of water to Israel's National Water Carrier Water-level elevation of the lake lies, on average, at about -211 m msl, whilst the head of the carrier lies at +110 m msl, and large sources of the supplied water can be accessed at +180 m msl. These differences in elevation attract initiatives in a project that would bypass Lake Kinneret and save energy. Limiting factors to this project are environmental and consumptive uses of water throughout the Kinneret watershed, dangers of salinization and eutrophication of the lake water and the size of the receiving carrier By means of simulation, this study estimates the yield of the bypass project and its effects upon salinity and water exchange in the lake. The simulation utilizes empirical models involving availability and salinity of water Its results indicate that the considered project could deliver 60 per cent of the carrier's supply from Lake Kinneret. It could also lead to a decline of about 0.25 m in mean elevati...
