Abstract

The objective of this study was to synthesize research findings on the teaching of English in Thailand that used the Audiolingual Method (ALM), over a period of approximately 60 years. The data consisted of 22 research documents published from 1962 to 2017, including those accounted for in two earlier review articles (Boonpok, 2011; Chunsuvimol & Charoenpanit, 2017), and was elicited mainly from online databases offered by university libraries. Data analysis shows that the earliest research on ALM use in Thailand was conducted at the beginning of the 1960s. ALM was mainly employed in the sole-use situations, rather than in combination or in comparison with other teaching methods. ALM data indicated that various types of drills, especially repetition drills, were the most frequently used techniques. All reviewed research on ALM in sole-use situations concluded ALM to be an effective teaching method, especially at the beginner level, irrespective of sample group characteristics or size, or length or region of data collection.
