Abstract

Following Boonpok (2011), this study is a further attempt to synthesize research on second/foreign language teaching using the Audiolingual Method (ALM). The data consist of 16 research documents published upthrough 2015, including those not accounted for in the earlier work and elicited from online databases offered by Thammasat University Library and Bangkok University Library. Data analysis shows that almost all reviewed research was concerned with the teaching of English in Indonesia and Thailand. In addition to sole use situations, ALM was used in combination or in comparison with another teaching method. Apart from conversation and pronunciation, ALM was also used to teach grammar. Various types of drills were the most frequently used techniques. Results also show that, besides school and university students, ALM has also been used to teach adult learners. All reviewed research found ALM to be an effective teaching method, especially at the beginner level.
