Abstract

Complexity in projects and inadequate conventional project management has led to development of new methods, from the study of complexity science, in managing project complexity. However, such methods still need to be validated. The study aims to analyze the methods that have emerged from the complexitytheory, taking into account construction projects. Several new project management approaches have been discussed, including the Butterfly effect, Complex Responsive Process of Relating, Temporary Knowledge Organization, Stacey's Eight- Strategy, the Complexity Change Process, the Model of Balancing the Project’s Forces and the Creative Reflective Model. This also analyzes the implication of the chaos theory in project management. The study shows that complexity science played a vital role in the project complexity management process. It has helped in benchmarking project management strategies for effective management of project complexity, uncertainties, and chaos. This is aninitial move to identify and appreciate the attempts in project management to improve complexity management in projects.
