Abstract

In order to improve the performance of law enforcement monitoring in Nandhaur Wildlife Sanctuary (NWS), the monitoring system for tiger intensive protection and ecological status (MSTrIPES) software was used for the first time to collect information for management practices, between January 2018 to April 2019. During this period, a total of 120 forest frontline staff were trained for patrol-based monitoring, data analysis, and illegal activities. All the old and new patrol routes were monitored every week and collected data on illegal activities, along with direct/indirect encounters of mammals. All the patrol effort was examined in terms of monthly man-days of patrol effort and distances walked (km). The present study showed that during 2018-2019, patrol performance was improved by 338.1%, and illegal activities were reduced by 32.65% in Nandhaur Wildlife Sanctuary. Our result showed that the patrol team covered 1971 km in 2016, 2027 km in 2017, 7123 km in 2018, and 1512 km up to April 2019. Along the patrol track, the patrol team counted all encounters with illegal activities and mammals direct and indirect sighting. The current law enforcement monitoring results support recommendation and management of the sanctuary.
