Abstract

The friction stir welding process of aluminium alloy AA-7075-T651 with 6 mm thickness of plates was investigated in this paper. The welded joints produced using the FSW process were found defect-free. Fully penetrated welds are obtained after the best process parameter selection. Optical observation depicted that the welded joint and area nearby can be divided into four zones SZ, TMAZ, HAZ and BM. Microstructural examination of various zones shows that SZ has very fine and equiaxed grains. Micro-hardness of the welded joint and base material has also been carried out and it was found that the average hardness of base material is higher compared to that of the welded joint. The lowest hardness was observed in the heat-affected zone. The tensile strength of base material and welded joint were also evaluated and obtained as 574 MPa and 278 MPa, respectively.
