Abstract

In this research, the microstructure and mechanical properties of permanent mould cast Al-Si (7 wt.% and 12 wt.%) alloys without and with different amounts of Zn (1 wt.%, 2 wt.% and 4 wt.%) were analysed. The Al-xSi-yZn alloys have been prepared through a stir casting process using an Al-15 wt.% Si master alloy at 800 °C. Optical microscopic analyses have revealed variation in the α-Al matrix and Si needles in the alloy with the variation in Zn content. The mechanical properties analysis has shown that the hardness, tensile strength and wear resistance of the alloys increase with the addition of Si but decrease with the addition of Zn, within the limit of the alloying additions of the present research.
