Abstract

Objective To investigate the short-term efficacy and adverse effects of whole brain radiotherapy combined with rotary gamma knife in the treatment of lung cancer with brain metastases. Methods Fifty-eight patients with brain metastases from lung cancer were divided into single group and combined group according to the treatment regimens, with 29 cases in each group. The single group was treated by whole brain radiotherapy; in addition to the whole brain radiotherapy, the combined group was treated by rotary gamma knife treatment. After six months of treatment, short-term efficacy and adverse effects were compared between the two groups. Results Short-term clinical total effective rate of the combined group [86.21% (25/29)] was significantly higher than that in the single group [58.62%(17/29)], and the difference was statistically significant (P 0.05). Conclusions Whole brain radiotherapy combined with rotary gamma knife gets more significant short-term effect and has high safety in the treatment of lung cancer with brain metastases, which is worthy of promotion and application in the clinical treatment. Key words: Whole brain radiotherapy; Rotating gamma knife; Lung cancer with brain metastases
