Abstract
The phosphorescence spectrum of 1-indanone (IND) at 77 K in a mixed solvent of ethanol and water exhibits dual phosphorescence. Although the short-lived emitting species is attributed to free triplet IND of nπ* character, the long-lived emitting species is attributed to a complex (triplet IND/H 2O (= 1: n) with a fixed number of n) of mixed nπ*-ππ* character. No emission due to the complex of IND with ethanol is observed.
