Abstract
Hypochlorite solutions have been utilised as cleansing and desloughing agents since 1915 when Dakin first described their application in the treatment of infected wounds. However recent work suggests that such solutions should be used with caution, if at all. Brennan and Leaper using the rabbit ear chamber found that the hypochlorite solutions, Eusol and chloramine T, delayed tissue healing by impairing the capillary circulation of granulation tissue. Cell culture studies using similar solutions have shown them to be potentially toxic to keratinocytes, neutrophils and endothelial cells3-• However studies suggesting a detrimental effect of hypochlorite solutions on healing in man are scarce, although Goode foundEusol Ribbon Gauze inferior to dextranomer in healing of postoperative wound infections.
