Abstract

Phenomenological theory of the magnetoelectric effect is applied to the monoclinic magnetic anisotropy energy, which procedure makes clear the effect of the K u term in the energy on magnetoelectric polarization. Based on this elucidation, a possible interpretation is proposed for the anomaly observed below 10 K in the temperature dependence of magnetoelectric polarization of magnetite.
