Abstract

When particles exist that are of a size which cannot be recognized as electron microscopic images, the particle size distribution may be truncated in observation. In considering this type of truncation, the size distribution of 56 samples of Ag particles each of which had been produced by the VEROS method was examined. The effect of truncation was recognized for 7 samples with smaller mean values among the 32 samples for which the log normality was accepted. It suggests that the truncation should be checked for cases in which the geometric mean size is less than about 3.4 nm. As for the remaining 24 samples, the log normality was statistically rejected. The rejection was probably due to biased sampling and measurement except in four samples.
