Abstract
The Bit Error Rate (BER) performance of a dispersion managed optical transmission link using Differential Phase Shift Keying (DPSK) modulation format in the presence of timing misalignment induced by Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD) has been investigated. The present work focuses on analytical evaluation of the timing jitter variance of the recovered signal, which is impaired by random pulse perturbation induced by PMD. The system performance penalty is obtained as a function of system parameters and the signal jitter characteristics. Our investigation shows that the random signal perturbations can seriously degrade bit-error-rate performance of the received DPSK signal. Our analysis also shows that DPSK modulation using RZ data is more robust to timing misalignment compared to NRZ-DPSK signal.
