Abstract

ABSTRACT SURFACE runoff and soil loss were measured during 1985 growing season from three tillage treatments of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum *McNair 235'); (a) no-till withou cover crop (NT), (b) no-till with winter wheat {Triticum aestivum L 'Coker 747') cover crop (NTC) and (c) conventional-till (CT), in the Tennessee Valley of north Alabama. Summer cultivation reduced runoff and maintained low sediment concentration. This may signify the potential of ^^combination tillage (conservation tillage with summer cultivation) to control summer weeds as an alternative to chemical control without enhancing soil erosion. The NTC maintained the lowest level of surface runoff and soil loss during the growing season while maintaining comparable yield.
