Abstract
The effect of Ti treatment on MnS inclusions and mechanical properties of a high‐strength sulfur‐containing steel is systematically investigated. The inclusions are mainly composed of pure MnS, TiN–MnS composite inclusion, cuboidal pure TiN with sharp corner and Ti4C2S2 after Ti treatment. Ti treatment had a good refining effect on MnS inclusions. With the increase of Ti content, the number of pure MnS with elongated shape decreased, while the number of shorter TiN–MnS composite inclusions increased. When the Ti treatment is higher than 0.031 wt%, the number of pure TiN and Ti4C2S2 increases. With the increase in Ti content, the strength increases significantly and the elongation decreases slightly. The highest strength is obtained when the Ti content is 0.031 wt%. A novel mechanism of MnS shape control by Ti treatment is proposed. Ti treatment can be applied in other steels containing MnS inclusions to improve the mechanical property.
