Abstract
Experimental evidence is discussed in order to show that the proximity of an external surface has a strong effect on the growth of inert gas bubbles. This effect can be explained as follows: while bubbles act as sinks, the external surface provides a copious source for vacancies. These observations suggest the possibility of the growth of inert gas bubbles through spontaneous vacancy condensation.
