Abstract

The results are presented of a study of the effect of the structure of solutions of cellulose acetates in acetic acid-water mixtures, on the characteristics of porous films (ultrafilters) prepared from the solutions. It was found that the relationships between the characteristics of the solutions and their water content pass through maxima, probably because of difference in the composition of hydrates of acetic acid. The concentration of water in the solutions affects their rate of phase separation. The size and number of pores in the ultrafilters can be controlled by varying the proportion of non-solvent (water) in the polymer solutions.
