Abstract

In this study, the effect of an applied DC electric field on the microstructure and electrical properties of flash-sintered 3YSZ ceramics was investigated. The results showed that the field applied for flash sintering had an evident effect on the microstructure and electrical properties of the resulting samples. The grain size and the conductivity of the flash-sintered samples both increased with the applied field. Since the activation energy is the same for both kinds of samples, the increase in conductivity may be caused by the increase in defect density. The results also showed that the estimated grain boundary thickness and the specific conductivity increased with the applied field, which could be accounted for by a space-charge layer model.
