Abstract

This article presents a general overview, along with the appropriate details, of the temperature effect on shape memory materials (SMMs). Three main classes of materials, namely, shape memory alloys (SMAs), shape memory polymers (SMPs) and shape memory ceramics (SMCs), are reviewed in terms of the mechanisms of thermo-responsive functional behavior, the influence of working temperature on functional behavior, and their microstructure evolution during fabrication and heat treatment, thus covering all important aspects of the topic.
